Puppies for Profit - Ending the Cruelty of Puppy Mills.
A puppy mill is a facility where purebred dogs are forced to live in
deplorable conditions in order to breed puppies over and over again - for
profit. Unfortunately, puppy mills are in operation throughout the United States
and thousands of dogs are suffering as a result.
The majority of dogs used for breeding are forced to live their entire lives
in small, overcrowded, unsanitary cages with poor quality food, no socialization
and minimal veterinary care.

in small, overcrowded, unsanitary cages with poor quality food, no socialization

When these "puppy parents" are no longer able to reproduce and have served the
mill's selfish needs by being repeatedly bred, they are killed.
Unknowing consumers purchase puppies bred at these mills through newspaper
ads, online, from the mill itself or from pet shops throughout the country. In
fact, an estimated 500,000 mill puppies are sold in approximately 3,500 pet
stores nationally each year.

On September 22, North Shore Animal League America rescued fifty-six
Chihuahuas from a puppy mill in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The Chihuahuas,
which range in age from one to eight, were subjected unforgivable conditions.
The visibly malnourished puppies were living in overcrowded and broken cages
with little food or water.

The owner, who was housing 80 dogs in a filthy building behind her house, was
arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after authorities received a complaint
from someone who bought a puppy that died within a week.
An investigation into
the complaint revealed that the owner was running an illegal business from her
home.

More than half of the rescued Chihuahuas were brought to the League where they were given full
medical examinations by our veterinarians.
They were vaccinated,
spayed or neutered and placed for adoption into new homes and given a second
chance at the happy and healthy lives they deserve.A happy ending for these
fifty-six mistreated dogs, but what about the countless others living in puppy
mills right now?
